My name is Michael Plageman and I am running for re-election to the Town Selectboard.

I have been a resident of Essex since December, 1985.  My wife Kathryn and I reside at

19 Beech Street in the village where we have lived since we moved to Essex.  Our

daughter, Elizabeth, attended Essex schools graduating in 2004.  She graduated magna

cum laude in 2008 from the University of New Hampshire.  She and her fiancé, Dave

now reside in Allston, Massachusetts.

In addition to my one term on the Selectboard, I have served Essex on several boards and

commissions.  I was a six year member of the Planning Commission serving one year as

chairman.  I served for two years on the Police Facility Committee culminating in the

choice of a new site for our police department and a very successful bond vote in

November, 2012.  I served as a member of the Essex Zoning Board of Adjustment for

five years.  I have been an active member of Essex Rotary since 1991.  I am running for

re-election to continue service to the Essex community and to work on the future

challenges facing us today.

I have several goals I want to continue if I am re-elected.

  •  Continue my record of collaboration and consensus building with the

  •  Continue my record of collaboration and consensus building with the Village

  •  Continue to look to combine government functions to gain efficiencies and save

money.  The Thoughtful Growth in Action group has recommended one

Planning Commission with two separate Design Review Boards for Essex.  This

important work will begin in 2016

  •  Continue the effort to minimize our reliance on the property tax to fund our

municipal services.  I will continue to work with the Economic Development

Commission as an ex-officio member to support and encourage our current

businesses to stay and expand here.  I want to continue to encourage and support

new businesses to locate in Essex.

  •  The recent merger of the Town, Village and Westford school systems has

necessitated a review of how Parks and Recreation services are delivered in

Essex.  This important work will begin in 2016

  •  As the Selectboard representative for the Ballot to Budget initiative, I am

looking forward to working to increase voter participation in the budget, election

and other business matters in Essex
